We have some sense from our own viewing patterns that there are times when we are very engaged with what we watch and others when we are simply sitting in front of the screen to pass time.

The difference between these moments is often marked by our emotional response to what we are watching — hence I shall argue that emotion is an important territory to be considered within a study of television audiences.

But how do we study television? Part of the study of television, as Nelson argues, is locating your research within a broader theoretical framework.
